Here is a fun themed activity to celebrate Valentine’s Day! This is a great gross motor activity, it’s fun to have up all month long, and you change it up seasonal for other holidays and occasions!
Heart Toss/”Love Toss”
Supplies
To create your own letter and/or number cards:
- Markers
- Paper
- Tape (or other wall-safe adhesive)
You can also buy a letter and/or number card pack at the store or online, or use one you already have at home.
Directions
- Create your own letter and/or number cards. You can also buy cards or use ones you already have on hand. To create your own cards, you will need to cut out heart shapes, add the numbers and/or letters, and decorate the cards (if you choose)!
- Tape the letter and/or number cards to the wall.
- Blow up a balloon.
- Toss the balloon toward the cards and identify the letter or number the balloon hits.
Notes
- Switch it up: This activity is called Heart Toss or “Love Toss” because of its heart-theme near Valentine’s Day, but you could easy switch this up for other occasions and holidays! Consider flowers for summer, pumpkins for Halloween, snowflakes for winter, or something else!
- Add steps: If you toss the balloon and it hits a letter card, identify the letter and then say a word that starts with that letter. If you toss the balloon and it hits a number, identify the number and then do a physical movement that many times. For example, if the balloon hits “6”, you would say “6” and then jump 6 times! You could also try jumping jacks, stepping or another movement.
- Try in reverse: Instead of tossing the balloon and seeing where it lands, announce the letter or number you are trying to hit and aim toward that letter or number. If you hit the letter or number you intended, celebrate! If not, try again! If there is more than one child, you can turn this into a game and award points when you correctly hit the letter or number you intend.
