Resources in Our Community This Summer

It is summertime, which might mean going to the beach or to another fun place for vacation. It could also mean hanging out and possibly looking for some family-friendly, activities to do with your children. For families who have children with varying disabilities, it also might mean looking a bit harder to find those sensory friendly activities that would be appropriate and meet their children’s needs.

At Penn Cinema, in Lititz, now through August 29, there is a summer kids camp series every Wednesday, with two showings, one at 10:00 am and one at 6:00 pm. A sensory friendly option is available every Wednesday at 10:00 am. All tickets are $4.00 for this camp series with no booking fees. For this sensory friendly option, there are a limited number of previews that are shown, the lights are turned up and the sound is turned down. Talking and moving around while the movie is being shown is welcome. For more information regarding this program, visit their website.

Another sensory friendly program that will be taking place this summer is at the Fulton Theater. On July 14th at 11:00 am, Beauty and Beast will be performed in a relaxed, friendly, and supportive environment for children and adults who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensory needs, and their families. The performance will run under an hour. Sensory Friendly performance adjustments include the following accommodations:

  • Spacing between families seated in the theatre
  • Reduction of any loud and jarring sounds
  • Eliminating strobe and flashing lights
  • House lights will be faintly dimmed, but remain on
  • Reduction of any elements of the show that might be considered “scary”
  • Break areas will be available with a live video feed of the show for anyone who may need to leave their seats during the performance
  • A social story will be made available on the Fulton Theatre website to help audience members prepare for a performance at the theatre
  • A team of volunteers and educators will be available to offer support throughout the theatre
  • A special Beauty and the Beast fidget will be given to each child attending the performance
  • Parking is available across the street, adjacent to Central Market

Summertime can be a time to recharge, take that much needed break and create some wonderful memories for families.  Having these 2 resources (described above) can hopefully add to your positive memories for this summer.  Enjoy!
