Spring has sprung, and we are sharing some fun activity ideas from Saturday Evening Program!
Activity #1
Paper Plate Swimming Duck
Supplies
- Yellow, orange and white construction paper
- 2 Paper plates
- Scissors
- Googly eyes
- Glue stick
- Blue and white craft paint
- Paint brush
- Markers
- Small jar lid
- Small bowl or larger jar lid
- Pencil
- Popsicle stick
Directions
- Paint most of one of the paper plates light blue for the sky.
- Cut the second paper plate in half and paint it a darker shade of blue to create the water for your duck to swim in. Set both plates aside to dry.
- Now it’s time to make the duck! Grab the yellow construction paper. Trace the small jar lid (for the head) and the bowl (for the body) with pencil, and cut them out.
- Cut straight across the large circle, leaving a little swoop for the ducktail.
- Cut out a small half circle for the duck’s wing and an orange triangle for the duck’s bill.
- Glue all of the parts together!
- You can use the marker to add additional details to the bill and feathers.
- Flip the duck over and tape the popsicle stick into place.
- Glue the googly eye into place.
- Once the paper paper plates are dry, it’s time to finish creating the water.
- Cut a long slit towards the bottom of the light blue paper plate.
- Trim the darker blue plate with a wavy line for the water effect.
- Add glue to the big plate below the cut line that was made and stick the water on top.
- Cut out some fluffy white clouds for the sky above! Stick them in place with some glue as well.
- Carefully feed the duck through the slit and watch it come to life in the water!
Happy Swimming!

Activity #2
Coffee Filter Butterflies
Supplies
- Dollar Store Coffee Filters
- Dollar Store Washable Markers
- Dollar Store Chenille Stems
- Dollar Store Pony Beads
- Dollar Store Zippered Bags – Gallon Size
- Spray Bottle filled with water – I like these bottles for crafting.
Directions
- Flatten out a coffee filter on top of a gallon size zippered bag.
- Draw random designs on the coffee filter with a variety of colors. Remember that color combinations next to each other on the color wheel will become muddy once blended – red and green; blue and orange; yellow and purple.
- Mist coffee filter with water from a spray bottle and then let dry completely. Set aside to dry but it’s super fun to watch the colors mix and blend!
- Create two tie-dyed coffee filters for each butterfly.
- Fan fold two coffee filters to create each butterfly.
- Stack fan folded coffee filters on top of each other.
- Fold chenille stem in half and place coffee filters one-third from base. Twist the bottom loop of the chenille stem. Twist once above the folded coffee filters, creating a tight section.
- Leave a ½” loop and twist again to create the butterfly head. Leave the antennae straight.
- Open and fluff out the wings of the butterfly. Pinch at the ends to retain the folds.
- Thread a pony bead on the end of each antennae and curl into a swirl.
Easy and colorful!
